Springboks’ Injury Woes Deepen as De Allende Joins Sidelined Eleven

Rugby

The South African national rugby team, the Springboks, is currently facing a significant challenge off the field as their injury toll continues to mount. Preparations for their upcoming fixtures have been complicated by a growing list of unavailable players.

The latest addition to the Springbok infirmary is experienced centre Damian de Allende. De Allende sustained a hamstring injury during the first test match of the series against Italy. While coach Rassie Erasmus has described the injury as not serious, it is sufficient to rule him out of selection for the second encounter with the Italians. The precise timeframe for de Allende`s return to play remains undetermined at this point.

De Allende`s hamstring issue means he joins an already extensive list of players sidelined due to injury. The depth of the Springbok squad is being rigorously tested as no fewer than ten other players are currently undergoing rehabilitation. The list includes:

  • Juarno Augustus (back injury, expected return in autumn)
  • Cameron Hanekom (hamstring injury, not expected back before October)
  • Gerhard Steenekamp & Ntuthuko Mchunu (knee injuries, targeted return in August)
  • Frans Malherbe (back injury, targeted return August-September)
  • Lukhanyo Am (knee injury, targeted return August-September)
  • Elrigh Louw (knee injury, sidelined for the remainder of the year)
  • Ben-Jason Dixon (leg injury, hoping for an August return)
  • Deon Fourie (ankle injury, targeted return August-September)
  • Trevor Nyakane (Achilles injury, also sidelined for the rest of the year)

This considerable number of unavailable players presents a significant logistical and strategic challenge for the coaching staff. It underscores the intense physical demands placed upon players in modern international rugby and the necessity of building a deep and resilient squad capable of absorbing such losses.

The second test match between South Africa and Italy is scheduled to take place on July 12th in Port Elizabeth, at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The Springboks will need other players to step up in the absence of these key individuals as they navigate the remainder of their schedule and their injured contingent works towards recovery.
