Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, a celebrated figure in NHL history, is on the cusp of achieving a monumental record. Already a legend, Ovechkin is closing in on Wayne Gretzky`s all-time goals record.
At 39 years old, Ovechkin is nearing the pinnacle of NHL goal-scoring history. He could surpass Gretzky`s record of 894 goals before this season concludes. Currently, Ovechkin has scored 892 career goals, including his 39th goal of the season on Wednesday in a game against the Hurricanes.
This goal marked Ovechkin`s third consecutive game with a score.
In his career, Ovechkin has amassed 1,616 points, consisting of 892 goals and 724 assists. With seven games remaining in the 2024-25 season for the Capitals, Ovechkin needs just three more goals to overtake Gretzky`s record.
While Ovechkin is approaching the record and has been scoring recently, the margin for error is slim. If he maintains his current scoring pace, he might break Gretzky`s record as early as April 17, the final day of the regular season, or even sooner.
