The Oilers secured their spot by eliminating the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night with a decisive 1-0 overtime win, taking the series 4-1. Meanwhile, after holding their ground at home in Games 3 and 4, the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, traveled to Toronto and overwhelmed the Maple Leafs, scoring six consecutive goals en route to a commanding 6-1 victory. This impressive performance sets up a potential series-clinching game for Florida at home on Friday night.
While Edmonton`s goaltender Stuart Skinner had not been the most consistent performer in the previous round and allowed 10 goals across the first three games against Vegas, he delivered flawless play over the final six-plus periods of the series. Skinner stopped all 45 shots he faced in Games 4 and 5. Kasperi Kapanen netted the winning goal at 7:14 of overtime, poking in a loose puck in the crease to send the Oilers to their second straight Western Conference Final. The Oilers are now waiting to face the winner of the series between the Jets and the Stars, with Dallas currently holding a 3-1 advantage.
Back in the Eastern Conference, Florida`s six-goal eruption contributed to a remarkable streak of nine consecutive goals scored by the Panthers, starting from their overtime victory in Game 3 last Friday. Florida had previously won Game 4 with a 2-0 shutout. On Wednesday, goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky stopped the first 31 shots directed at him, narrowly missing back-to-back shutouts by just 66 seconds. Jesper Boqvist and A.J. Greer each scored their first career playoff goals, and defensemen Aaron Ekblad, Dmitry Kulikov, and Niko Mikkola also contributed by finding the back of the net.
