Joe Rogan, a long-time commentator for the UFC since 1997, feels strongly that he tried to steer Dana White and the UFC away from what he sees as a misstep.
Rogan, who is deeply connected to the sport and the organization, isn`t shy about sharing his opinions. He has previously voiced concerns about Dana White`s treatment of Magomed Ankalaev.
Now, Rogan is bringing up another issue he has with the UFC`s direction.
Rogan Advocates for UFC Kickboxing Investment Over Power Slap
Joe Rogan is convinced that the UFC and Dana White should have heeded his advice to invest in kickboxing rather than Power Slap.
The 57-year-old believes that prioritizing kickboxing would have significantly impacted the combat sports landscape.
During his “Joe Rogan Experience Fight Companion” podcast, he stated his opinion plainly: “I think the UFC messed up by choosing slap fighting. I`ve been telling them for a long time, `You should get into kickboxing.` If you`re a fan of stand-up fighting, kickboxing isn`t like it used to be when it was less exciting. The knockouts are incredible.”
He elaborated, “Kickboxing with MMA gloves in a cage would be massive. They could easily create a striking-only segment within the UFC. Glory has top-tier fighters. I watch Glory regularly, and it`s really exciting, but it lacks viewership. Most people don`t even know who these fighters are.”
Rogan`s Passion for Striking Sports
It`s not surprising that Rogan is pushing for UFC to invest in kickboxing. His own passion for combat sports began with participation in various striking disciplines.
Before becoming a commentator, Rogan built a reputation in fighting tournaments, which is a key reason why fighters hold him in such high regard.
His combat sports background not only earns him respect from the fighters he commentates on but also proves useful in real-life situations, as evidenced by a story where he faced down a group of would-be robbers.
Rogan has recounted an incident where a gang threatened to rob him, highlighting the practical application of his fighting skills.
