Former UFC champions Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira have been exchanging strong words on social media after Oliveira, known as `do Bronx`, suggested he could knock out the rising star.
Despite retiring his `El Matador` nickname, Ilia Topuria remains confident in his ability to win a second world title, this time in the lightweight division.
While his lightweight debut opponent is yet to be announced, Topuria is clearly not looking to make friends in his new weight class.
Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira Engage in Online Jabs
In a recent interview, Charles Oliveira acknowledged Topuria`s achievements in the featherweight division but questioned his impact at 155lbs.
Oliveira stated, “Topuria is a tough fighter and deserves respect, but I don`t see it as a major fight right now… My focus is on fighting Makhachev for the title and becoming champion again.”
Ilia Topuria quickly responded on social media, telling Oliveira to “stay quiet” as the new dominant force in the division has arrived.
Topuria retorted, “Charles, you should be quiet. You have 10 losses, including 5 knockouts, 4 submissions, and 1 decision. You are a contender, I am the champion, the division`s father. I am not asking for anything; I am in charge here.”
Neither fighter has their next UFC bout officially scheduled, but Oliveira has previously asserted his speed and power could lead to a knockout victory over Topuria.
Former Champion Predicts Topuria Victory
While a Charles Oliveira vs. Ilia Topuria fight would be exciting, other options exist for Topuria`s lightweight debut. A potential matchup against Justin Gaethje is being discussed, with one former champion predicting a decisive win for Topuria.
Jorge Masvidal stated on the Adversity Kings Podcast that Topuria`s power surpasses even that of Islam Makhachev, saying, “He hits harder than almost every 55er… his technique is legit. He could win and defend the belt. He’d beat Gaethje, he’ll put Gaethje in a coma.”
Former champions Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo have also suggested alternative opponents for Topuria in the lightweight division. The question remains: who will Topuria face in his debut at 155lbs?
