World No. 10 tennis player Emma Navarro recently discussed her feelings about public conversations concerning her family`s financial status. Emma`s father, Ben Navarro, is a billionaire and owns the tennis tournaments held in Charleston and Cincinnati.
Navarro explained that she makes an effort not to read comments or articles about herself or what fans are saying. While she acknowledges that headlines sometimes mention her father`s billionaire status, she emphasized that her personal upbringing was not one of privilege where everything was simply handed to her.
I don`t read anything – no comments, no articles, nothing. I don`t know what the fans are saying. Of course, you see headlines mentioning that my father is a billionaire, and that`s fine. But I didn`t grow up in conditions where everything was just given.
We grew up in pretty strict, traditional conditions, waking up early on Saturdays to play tennis… From a young age, it was important for us to become resilient, hardworking, to know how to set goals and lead a productive life.
She concluded by stating that due to her values and how she was raised, she strongly dislikes being labeled or defined by her family`s wealth, calling it a label she doesn`t like at all.
