A former UFC title contender believes Leon `Rocky` Edwards still has much to offer in the coming years if he can maximize his potential.
Edwards suffered a unanimous decision defeat against Sean Brady at UFC London, prompting questions about his future in the sport.
While some suggested Edwards take a break, others proposed a move to a higher weight class for a fresh start.
Edwards has also faced criticism regarding his fighting spirit and mentality after being dominated by Brady.
However, Dan Hardy believes that despite needing to make changes, the former welterweight champion can still finish his career strong.
Dan Hardy: Leon Edwards Should Learn from Robbie Lawler`s Stylish Exit
In a recent interview, Dan Hardy shared his perspective on Leon Edwards` next steps.
Hardy doesn`t view the loss as a career-ending setback for Edwards, but he pointed out a missing element in his recent performances.
“He has reached the top and will always be recognized as a former UFC champion, keeping him in contention for significant fights. Leon has also remained healthy throughout his career.”
“He hasn`t endured as much damage as some others in the division. I believe he still has time, but despite his technical skills, physical attributes, speed, reach, and height, he needs to rediscover his drive to pursue victory.”
Hardy suggested Edwards should look to Robbie Lawler, a UFC Hall of Famer known for his exciting retirement.
Hardy wants Edwards to focus on making the most of his remaining years in the Octagon and fight with less pressure.
Despite inconsistent form after losing his welterweight title in 2016, Lawler delivered memorable fights and concluded his career with a knockout victory over Niko Price at UFC 290.
Hardy highlighted Lawler as an example for Edwards to follow, encouraging him to enjoy his remaining time in the sport.
“I think Leon has more fights left in him. He should think, `I have 5-6 fights left, I`ve been a UFC champion, I have nothing to lose, let`s go all out.` Robbie Lawler finished his career impressively.”
“Lawler pushed himself towards the end, having many exciting fights. Perhaps Leon was too cautious before winning the title. Now, without that pressure, he can unleash his potential. He`s a dangerous fighter; he just needs to want to finish opponents. Motivation is key, and that`s what Leon needs to find now.”
Leon Edwards Should Aim to Settle a Grudge Match
To secure big fights, Leon Edwards needs a compelling matchup that will reignite fan interest.
His ongoing rivalry with Jorge Masvidal could be the answer, especially with Masvidal`s planned return to the Octagon.
Masvidal hasn`t fought in two years and is on a four-fight losing streak, but their history makes this a significant fight.
While it might have seemed like a step down for Edwards previously, it could now be the right fight to get him back on track.
