Dallas Stars Hire Glen Gulutzan as Head Coach

The recent wave of coaching changes in the NHL appears to be concluding. The Dallas Stars have officially announced the hiring of Glen Gulutzan as their new head coach, stepping in for Peter DeBoer. This appointment was confirmed by the team on Tuesday.

This move marks Gulutzan`s return to a head coaching position, his first since 2018. For the preceding six seasons, he served as an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers. In a statement released by the team, Dallas General Manager Jim Nill commented on Gulutzan`s significant growth and development since his initial tenure with the Stars organization from 2011 to 2013.

“We are extremely pleased to appoint Glen as the head coach of the Dallas Stars,” Nill stated. “Since his prior time in Dallas, Glen has dedicated considerable effort to establish himself as one of the league`s most highly-regarded coaches. His extensive background in the NHL, encompassing both head coaching and assistant roles, highlights his capacity to innovate, adapt to the evolving game, and cultivate strong relationships with players. Glen has collaborated with some of the world`s elite players and consistently demonstrated an ability to maximize their potential to contribute to team success. We are fully confident that he possesses the qualities needed to elevate our team to a higher level.”

Dallas initially provided Gulutzan with his first head coaching opportunity in 2011, but that period did not yield the desired results. He guided the team to a record of 64-57-9 over two seasons, failing to reach the playoffs. Gulutzan also coached the Calgary Flames from 2016 to 2018, where he compiled an 82-68-14 record. He did lead the Flames to the postseason in 2017, although they were swept by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round.

Looking at other recent coaching shifts around the league, the Pittsburgh Penguins brought in former New York Rangers assistant Dan Muse. The Seattle Kraken hired former New York Islanders head coach Lane Lambert. The Vancouver Canucks promoted assistant Adam Foote, and Rick Tocchet rejoined the Philadelphia Flyers as their new head coach.

With the hiring of Glen Gulutzan, all reported head coaching vacancies across the NHL for the upcoming season are now filled.
