Colby Covington, a figure known for his controversial statements and fighting style in the UFC, has surprisingly called out veteran fighters Nick and Nate Diaz, suggesting they should be his opponents for his next fight.
After failing to secure the undisputed UFC welterweight title for the third time, Covington aimed to stay relevant in the title conversation by facing Joaquin Buckley last December.
However, his performance against Buckley was underwhelming, culminating in a doctor`s stoppage victory for Buckley after he dominated Covington.
Since that defeat, Covington has been seeking ways to remain in the public eye, even joining Chael Sonnen`s team for the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.
Colby Covington Wants Fights Against Nick and Nate Diaz
As Colby Covington`s UFC career seems to be approaching a critical point, he continues to generate attention through controversial remarks in the media.
Looking ahead to his potential return to the Octagon, Covington is aiming for high-profile matchups against either Nick Diaz or Nate Diaz.
Nick Diaz has not competed in the UFC since 2021, when he suffered a defeat against Robbie Lawler. He was scheduled to fight Vicente Luque twice, but personal issues prevented his return.
Nate Diaz last fought in the UFC in 2022, defeating Tony Ferguson in his final contracted fight with the promotion.
“I want to fight one of the Diaz brothers. They are big names, legends, and attract a lot of attention. They sell pay-per-views and create excitement. I am looking to fight legends,” Covington stated in an interview with Submission Radio.
Covington Threatens UFC Commentator Paul Felder
In addition to calling out the Diaz brothers, Covington also made threats towards UFC commentator and former fighter Paul Felder.
This isn`t the first time Covington has targeted a UFC commentator. In 2023, he also threatened Jon Anik.
“If Paul Felder keeps criticizing me from the commentary booth, he will also get slapped. He has been talking negatively about me, saying things like `He’s done` and other things,” Covington said.
“Next time you see him, ask him about the time at Joint Base Langley Eustis, when military police handcuffed him to a toilet in his bathroom because he was drunk on base.”
“It’s embarrassing. He is a self-loathing drunk. He must be drunk half the time he is commentating for the UFC… They need new commentators, and who would be better than me? I could be a UFC commentator,” he added.
