Conor McGregor Hints at UFC Retirement Amid Presidential Aspirations

Sports News

Conor McGregor has suggested he is content with his accomplishments in MMA as he considers a new career path following his MMA retirement.

The famous UFC champion in two weight classes has not fought since injuring his leg in his third fight against Dustin Poirier in the summer of 2021. A fight with Michael Chandler was planned for last summer but was cancelled because of McGregor`s broken toe.

Conor McGregor Considers Retirement Before Potential Irish Presidential Campaign

For the last four years, Conor McGregor has been publicly urging UFC president Dana White to schedule his return to the octagon. He recovered from his injury within a year after his last fight but remained inactive for two more years.

Now, as he considers running for President of Ireland, he is starting to acknowledge that his fighting career might be coming to an end. Speaking at a BKFC media event, he mentioned he is satisfied with his legacy in fighting and that he is now drawn to “something else”.

“I have two fights left on my contract, and negotiations are ongoing,” he told reporters when asked about a possible boxing match. “Last week, something significant happened to me; I visited the White House, and my heart is heavy for my country right now.”

“So, there are many things happening back home, and I am happy with what I have achieved. There is another path in my gut right now, and that`s the direction I`m heading.”

The former lightweight and featherweight champion will turn 37 this July. If he were to run and win the Irish Presidency, he would serve a seven-year term. While he claims he would like to fight while in office, it is highly improbable and would mean being away from fighting for possibly eleven years.

Conor McGregor Discloses Rejected Fight Offer Amid Presidential Run

In a part of McGregor`s statement that was not widely circulated on social media, he talked about a recent offer to fight in Alcatraz. He felt the offer was inadequate, considering his massive pay-per-view appeal, which remains unmatched in combat sports.

It is known that boxing promoter Turki Alalsheikh has been interested in hosting an event on the famous island in California. However, it`s unclear if this was the offer presented to McGregor, or if different plans are being considered.

“There was an opportunity, or let`s say a proposal, to fight in Alcatraz recently,” McGregor continued. “There’s an event planned in Alcatraz, I believe in June. They approached me, but the offer was not worthy of my value.”

“As a fighter, you must recognize your worth. I hold every pay-per-view record and gate record, and my return will be billed as the greatest and most anticipated comeback ever.”

“So, it needs to be right. Right now, Ireland is on my mind, and that`s my focus, but it will happen, I am sure, and it’s always great to be at BKFC.”
