Former world No. 1 Boris Becker has commented on whether this year`s Roland Garros might have been Novak Djokovic`s final appearance at the tournament.
Becker reflected, “When I think about it, it still gives me goosebumps, just like that evening. It was bound to happen sooner or later. He is 38 years old and is having what could be considered an average season by his standards. A semi-final in Melbourne is solid, a final in Miami is great. But on clay, with the exception of Geneva, he didn`t meet his objectives. He has to ask himself: if he`s not winning as much anymore, why keep going?”
He continued, “He wants to win 25 Grand Slams; that`s what he`s aiming for. I believe he is still excellent on grass. It suits him better than clay. And considering what he demonstrated last week [referring to his performance before withdrawing from Roland Garros], why shouldn`t he? But in a year… who knows if we will see him at Roland Garros again?” Becker was quoted by Tennis World Italia.
