Alexander Volkanovski, known as ‘The Great’, finally received his own unique UFC shorts, and fans are expressing widespread admiration.
In the earlier days of the UFC, fighters had freedom in their attire, ranging from jiu-jitsu uniforms and footwear in the 1990s to speedos in the 2000s. This changed when the UFC partnered with Reebok and subsequently Venum, leading to standardized uniforms for all fighters.
While most fighters adhere to the standard uniform, some UFC stars like Sean O’Malley, with his vibrant pink shorts, and Bryce Mitchell, with his sought-after Realtree camo shorts, maintain distinctive looks.
Custom shorts from Venum gained significant attention after Alexander Volkanovski`s loss to Ilia Topuria at UFC 298.
Symbolism Behind Volkanovski’s UFC Shorts
Volkanovski`s nickname, ‘Alexander The Great,’ is inspired by the ancient Macedonian king who famously conquered the Persian Empire and a vast portion of the known world. His custom shorts are a tribute to his Macedonian heritage.
Volkanovski’s shorts feature a color scheme of deep green and gold, adorned with the Greek meander pattern.
Two laurel leaves are incorporated just below the waistband, ancient symbols representing honor and victory, reflecting Volkanovski`s successful UFC career, which includes 16 fights.
Adjacent to the laurel leaves, a circular shield displays ‘THE GREAT’ in Greek characters, referencing his nickname. The other side of the shorts features his name in gold lettering, appropriate for his recent 10th consecutive title fight.
UFC Fans Celebrate the `Finest Shorts Yet`
Despite not always being a fan favorite, Alexander Volkanovski has gained considerable respect from UFC fans, especially through his performances against Max Holloway and ‘The Korean Zombie’, and even after his defeats to Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria.
One fan commented online, “Those are undoubtedly the best custom shorts.”
Another added, “Those are seriously tough.”
A fan also noted a similarity to Dricus du Plessis`s shorts but still praised them as “fire.”
Another fan optimistically stated, “Volkanovski’s shorts are fire, Lopes is going to get cooked.”
Echoing the sentiment, a fan exclaimed, “Daaaaaaamn, those are the best shorts yet!”
Custom shorts and a return to the Octagon mark a significant moment for Volkanovski, who had been away from fighting for over a year.
Fans are eager to see if Alexander ‘The Great’ can reclaim the featherweight division title against Diego Lopes at UFC 314, for the title recently vacated by Ilia Topuria.
Volkanovski’s first reign as champion lasted 1,521 days and included five successful title defenses.
